Changes in Spain
The war changed Spain itself too. The changes were not just global.
The war brought many deaths. During and after the war many political enemies of Franco and the Fascists were killed and much more atrocities were committed to the citizens of Spain. This lead to a massive loss of life. Franco also sent Spanish people to Germany to repay the "debt from the war". This meant sending thousands of Spanish people to work camps were many of them would die before the end of World War 2. Most of this information was kept secret and even then most don't know the totals due to the destroying of evidence by Franco's decision.
Many other Spanish people left Spain to leave the persecution by the government. Almost all ended up in France Eventually many would end up in German work camps. These losses of life could have helped Spain become stronger due to a larger amount of manpower for industries and farming.
The war also created a tense divide politically between the left and right that a hasn't mended due to the length of Franco's rule. It could be much worse if Franco's successor didn't convert Spain into a democracy. Even today both sides have a very strong hatred for one an other. Even some groups still wish to restore Fascism and have attacked and threatened people in Spain today.
All of that adds even more importance to the Spanish Civil War and its role in history and how it's affects people today.
